About Anxiety

Anxiety is a complex emotional response, characterised by feelings of unease, fear, and worry. It manifests in different forms for different people and can be triggered by stress, trauma or genetic factors. It can be mild or completely debilitating, with physical symptoms like rapid heartbeat, sweating and difficulty breathing. It can interfere with daily life, relationships and overall wellness. However, with proper understanding and strategies, individuals can learn effective coping mechanisms to manage anxiety, leading to a more balanced and enjoyable life.

What you will learn

Understanding anxiety will help you to recognise its symptoms, causes and effects. This will empower you to learn the appropriate techniques or to seek extra support.

Learn common anxiety triggers, including stress, specific situations, traumatic experiences, certain phobias or internal thought patterns and worries.

Anxiety often follows cyclical patterns, where triggers lead to anxious thoughts and physical sensations, which reinforce the cycle of anxiety. Identify cycles such as OCD and social anxiety.

Individuals may respond to anxiety with avoidance, hyperarousal, or safety behaviours. Understanding these responses is crucial in developing effective coping strategies.

We’ll teach you various techniques that can help manage anxiety, including deep breathing exercises, mindfulness, cognitive restructuring, self-care, and seeking professional therapy or counselling.

Learn the power of meditation, a mindfulness practice that can calm the mind, promote relaxation, and reduce anxiety. Focus on the present moment and cultivating inner peace and awareness.

What causes anxiety?
Anxiety can have multiple causes, including genetic factors, brain chemistry imbalances, traumatic experiences, chronic stress, certain medical conditions, and substance abuse. It can also be triggered by specific situations or phobias.
What are the most common symptoms of anxiety?
Anxiety symptoms can vary from person to person, but common presentations include excessive worrying, restlessness, irritability, difficulty concentrating, sleep disturbances, muscle tension, and physical symptoms like rapid heartbeat and shortness of breath.
I feel like I’m having a heart attack from anxiety. Is there something wrong with me?
Not at all. Anxiety is a normal response to fear. The mind escalates anxiety by catastrophising thoughts and feeding the symptoms, making them grow bigger and bigger. This course will teach you strategies to still the mind and cope with fear and anxiety in a healthier way.
How is anxiety diagnosed?
Diagnosing anxiety typically involves a thorough assessment by a mental health professional. They may evaluate symptoms, conduct interviews, and utilise diagnostic criteria from the DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) to determine the presence of an anxiety disorder.
I haven’t been officially diagnosed with anxiety. Is this module for me?
Knowledge is power. While nothing can replace professional, in person therapy or medication, equipping yourself with the right information and fundamental tools is a great foundation. This module will help you identify triggers and learn strategies such as lifestyle modifications, stress management techniques and meditation.
Is anxiety different from everyday stress or worry?
While some level of stress and worry is a normal part of life, anxiety involves excessive and persistent worry that significantly interferes with daily functioning. Unlike ordinary stress, anxiety often persists even when there is no apparent reason for it and can be accompanied by physical symptoms. If anxiety starts to impact your life negatively, it's advisable to seek professional help.
