About Grief and Loss

Grief isn’t linear. It doesn’t have a set timeline. It manifests in diverse ways. Emotionally, grief can encompass a range of intense feelings such as sadness, anger, guilt, and confusion. It may also lead to physical symptoms like fatigue, loss of appetite, and sleep disturbances. Grief manifests in cognitive processes too, as individuals grapple with disbelief, a sense of emptiness, and a struggle to make sense of the loss. It can also be socially isolating. Each person’s journey with grief and loss is unique.

Who is this course appropriate for?
People over the age of 18 from all over the world who are experiencing grief or loss, from any cultural background. If you are experiencing the emotional rollercoaster of grief and PTSD, this module will help soothe turbulent emotions. This module may also be useful for those supporting someone suffering grief and loss, who would like to obtain a deeper understanding of the impact of grief.
How is understanding the grief cycle helpful?
The grief cycle, by normalising a wide range of emotions and providing a framework for understanding their fluctuations, helps individuals navigate the complex and non-linear nature of grief.
What does the "Are you grieving too hard?" questionnaire measure?
The questionnaire measures symptoms associated with grief, including PTSD-related symptoms and the breadth of emotions experienced. It provides a quantitative assessment that can guide the use of appropriate techniques for the grief process.
How long can I grieve for?
There is no right or wrong duration for grieving. Each person's journey is unique, and the timeline can vary. Generally, symptom relief may occur within 3-6 months, followed by emotional processing. Triggers, such as birthdays or anniversaries, may still evoke emotions even after this period.
How can I support someone who is grieving?
Offering a compassionate presence, active listening, and validating their emotions can be valuable. Respect their individual grieving process, provide practical assistance, and encourage self-care. Being available to talk or seek professional help can also be supportive.
What self-care strategies can help cope with grief?
Engaging in self-care practices like exercise, maintaining a healthy routine, seeking support from loved ones or support groups, practicing relaxation techniques, and engaging in activities that bring comfort or joy can aid in coping with grief.
